National Reconciliation Week 2017

Date: 30/06/2017

Each year National Reconciliation Week celebrates and builds on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians.

This year, the Commission organised a series of activities for staff to recognise the theme of ‘Taking the Next Steps’ as part of our Reconciliation Action Plan.

During the week, metropolitan-based Commission staff attended a Welcome to Country by Matthew McGuire, a representative of the Whudjuk people, followed by a morning tea of delicious Indigenous foods.

A walk and talk through Kaara Katta (Kings Park) also gave staff an insight into Aboriginal culture and heritage abundant in the local area.

This event included an engaging and entertaining talk by Whadjuk Nyoongar elder Dr Richard Walley OAM. Staff in regional offices were also encouraged to hold events during the week.

This year’s National Reconciliation Week program was a great success, with staff across the organisation taking the time to learn more about Aboriginal heritage and culture during this important week.
